Is this bumblefoot? Chicken walking strangely.

Etta, one of my young Faverolles threw up a red flag a few days ago when I noticed that she was walking strangely. She's not acting too weird, limping or noticeably favoring one foot, but sometimes will walk a bit sideways. When I throw out some treats, all the girls come straight at me, but she will come 90% of the way, slow down and come at the treats at a 45' angle. Weird.

I looked, but didn't see anything a few days ago.

Today she was doing it again, and since their leg-bands needed changing anyway I thought I would wash her feet and see what I could find:

A small patch in the center of her pad.... And that pad is slightly 'puffier' than the other foot on the same bird. While touching, she didn't squirm or yell, but I suspect this is not normal.

I read the "chicken chick" page on the subject briefly before coming here, but was hoping that surgery wasn't necessary.. Of course I will do it if it's what has to be done...

Opinions?

Sunflour is correct - that is a very good thread with nice pictures and how to instructions. I haven't been able to find the magnapaste but used icthamamol which is a drawing salve. My two Light Brahmas seem to take turns getting it. They are the only ones in my flock who regularly have it.

Thanks, I read through that thread and got some ideas. A question lingers - When do I need to break out the scalpel vs. just covering in antibiotics and wrapping?

One other thing that the thread posted had mentioned - My roosts are relatively high up in the coop with no ramps. I took them out after a few weeks of watching them never use them. Perhaps I need to revisit this situation.

I have never treated it personally, why not repost on that thread and get input from those who have. But IMO, I would not cut unless there is something to drain. Bumble foot is a staph bacterial infection and you incise to drain that. The person with roost height issue saw the problem in multiple heavies. It could be a random cut or abrasion that caused it. If you think the roosts are too high, lower them or add a ramp. Inspect all to make sure they don't have it. If you see pus, be sure to wash your hands not spread it. Humans get impetigo from staph. Good luck. Let us know how she does.

3rd day of being cleaned, smothered in antibiotic ointment and gently wrapped.

No worse. No better.

Thinking I might have to move on to something more serious..

My chooks did that but with a cold. Keep the two separate for a while until both haven't shown symptoms for about 4 days-1 week. Should stop it. Give them separate food, water, bedding, etc.
