Aggressive Rooster

send ya child in there with a broom, and tell her to play hockey with him,, bat him round for 20 minutes,, then see if he does it,, if not,, he just needed a lesson, just like our kids do,,if he keeps it up,, cull him ,, but you should be able to teach them both to get along,, very few roo's are totally mean,, would be awful to cull if he was just having a bad day,,, their like us,, not all days can we be great people.

EDIT: ta say ,, sometimes roo's are just being roo's ,, some days 1 of mine are having a bad day, i can tell the minute i see him,, and the kids and wife are told to leave him alone,, if they dont, and he flogs them,,, THEY get the "speech" cause it was their fault.

What do you mean by "Flogs them?"

Shortly after we got into the chicken game with a few RIRs and leghorns a local prankster brought us a rooster because every henhouse "needs one". We were pretty ignorant about chooks but were impressed with the 2" Spurs on this old fella. Never gave a thought about what they could do, and when we gave him away six years later we still had not seen the Spurs in action. We only gave him a new home because a weasel got the rest of our revolving flock and the coop was too cold for one bird.
Last week we started collecting a new flock of donated birds and after 9 mixed breeds we answered an ad for a free Silkie rooster. She "could not have a rooster in her location." .??
Turned out that she had a Silkie hen and two chicks that she was keeping, lived 200 yards down the highway from us and wanted to get rid of the meanest critter in the area. I have a feeling someone had run out of patience......We have no kids so will give him a week to settle down and behave, or else......

I have 2 roosters both around 26 weeks, or 6 1/2 months, old. One boy crowed and became "a rooster" weeks before the other. I recently started having problems with the second rooster. He seems to randomly pick on the girls. I have 5 girls of laying age and 6 more about to lay. I've seen this roo grab the girls by the comb, while standing in front of them, and pull their head down. Even go as far as shake them like he's trying to rip their comb off! The 2 boys don't fight. Neither are aggressive to me. I don't see anything happening before I hear the poor girl screaming.
What's his problem? He recently started crowing and I've seen him mate with the girls. I wasn't planning on roosters at all let alone 2. I don't want to cull him but I wouldn't want to rehome him and have him be nasty to someone else's girls. Is there a solution to this? Will he be nicer with more girls available?

Do you have any older hens? My experience with roosters the same or similar age to the hens is that they have to figure out how to act on their own, and they aren't always nice about it. Older hens teach younger cockerels manners. I'd get rid of him, personally, if he doesn't improve. If you keep the other rooster, make sure to see to it that he has enough hens. 10 to one is a reasonable ratio.

I have 4 brown leghorns and a rir all 3+ years in age. I got them all when they were over 2. I got the leghorns originally because someone else who had taken them in was having problems with them going over an 8ft fence to get away from their roosters. They had never been mated. I have a hen the same age as the roos as well. I was not planning on a rooster myself and ended up with 2. The leghorns are still not keen on being mated and will gang up on both the boys to get him off one of their sisters. He seems to do it most to my 4 girls that are just about to start laying. I expect eggs from them in the next week or so. Then I have 2 more that should come of age 2 weeks after that. I've seen him mate with an older girl and he wasn't rough about it. I wondered if he is trying to mate with the younger ones that aren't quite ready and when they refuse he beats them up. He doesn't seem to notice the 2 youngest even exist. This all started within the last 2 weeks or so. He really was a great boy up until then. I figured with only 12 girls I would have to try and rehome him but I didn't want to give someone else a problem rooster. Not ever having one before I wasn't sure if it was possible for him to improve his behavior in different circumstances.
