Straw, hay or wood shavings in nesting boxes?

Quote:
Last year it probably would have been quite a bit more, because it was so dry they were importing hay from other states.
This year looks like everyone did just fine with their hay. The man we bought it from had 8 outbuildings full. Our second choice would have been from the farmer's co-op. They are getting $6 a square bale.

Diatemacious earth is harmful if inhaled. I'm wondering if this thread needs updating. These posts are from 2008. (?)

I use straw. It's easy to clean, really cheap, and my hens love it. When it gets cold outside they'll snuggle into the straw. The problem with hay is that it catches fire as it dries if it's wet. We avoid using hay as much as possible, just because my girls are pretty messy. In the summer I use pine shavings, but it's harder to clean and not quite as padded for the eggs. The only con with straw is that mice like to nest in it (Same with hay). I don't seem to have this issue with shavings, so I would opt towards those unless you live in a super cold climate :). Of course, if you keep a heating lamp in your coop, never add straw or hay. Only use shavings.
