Do Austra Whites or California Whites Breed True?

No, they don't. I did the austra white to austra white breeding 50 years ago as a school science project. I got some white, some white with black specs like the parents, some black, and a couple of blues. some were built like leghorns, some like australorps, some like austra whites. Austra whites are a cross between white leghorn hens and Black australorp roos. They will throw back to characteristics of the parent breeds. for each characteristic, the ratio will be one fourth like the one grandparent, one fourth like the other, and half like the parents. For example. You should get one fourth Black, one fourth white, and one fourth white with black specks in the chicks. California whites are California grey over White leghorn. I've never done the cross but according to the chicken calculator. http://kippenjungle.nl/kruising.html You would get 12.5% barred and 12.5% black. 75% would be white.

No they don't. I did the Austra white to Austra white breeding as a school project 50 years ago. I got some white with black specs like the parents, some pure white, some black and a couple of blues. some were built like a leghorn some like an australorp and some like the parents. California Whites being a cross between California grey and white leghorn should give 12.5 percent barred 12.5percent black and 75% white.

Thank you very much!! That makes a lot of sense to me now. I'll just have to keep some purebred parents in one pen and Austra Whites in another and just rotate generations as need be...Again Thank You and Happy Thanksgiving!!
