I ordered 5 silkies online and ended up with two marans and two silkies. They are supposed to be sending me more silkies at some point. One maran is a rooster, no doubt in my mind. I originally thought to put the marans with my full sized chickens when they were bigger, but I don't want a rooster with my egg layers. So I can do two things. Introduce the new silkies to the marans & silkies and make them a flock. That worries me because I don't want the marans to be brutal to the new silkies when they're big enough to combine. The second option would be to get a few more marans and have three flocks. My older hens I have no, have the whole front fenced in yard. The silkies are going in a tractor. I could put the marans in a tractor or make them a bigger yard. Any thoughts?
 
Just out of curiosity, why don't you want your rooster with your egg layers? If you have the means to have three separate flocks I'd say go for it. I have never personally had silkies, I've only read that sometimes they get picked on because of the puffy feathers. Besides that though, I don't see why they couldn't live together in harmony.
 
They're much tinier than the marans. At almost two months, they are about half the size. So the marans could easily injure the new ones. Or at least that's what I'm worried could happen.

I'm a big baby and it icks me out eating fertilized eggs. That's all.
 
Oh, I can understand that. But technically you're not eating anything until 24 hours of an egg being incubated. (just an fyi not trying to convert you :) )

Besides the possible feather picking I think they may still coexist alright. I have some larger chickens and then a couple leghorns who are quite a bit smaller, but they do alright together. In fact the smaller ones are my most troublesome haha
 
There's a third option.....get rid of that rooster. You never wanted him in the first place and are under no obligation to keep him forever. No need to make an entire flock around an Oops bird. Then put the Marans hen in with your layers. Problem solved.

I want to keep him, for now anyway. I haven't had a rooster before. I might change my mind. I don't mind the maran and silkies having chicks, so a rooster with them is ok. I guess I'll see how it goes.

I know Baybay. I just cracked open a developing egg once from a neighbor and it tramatized me. Lol. Plus I'm so lazy getting eggs, I would probably end up with a bloody one.
