If you try an Advanced Search on Cayenne you'll find differing opinions on its utility.

It is probably best to assume the respiratory illness is chronic (if treated they might be symptom free, but still able to infect other poultry) See if this looks similar: http://www.merckmanuals.com/vet/pou...lasma_gallisepticum_infection_in_poultry.html

Separating the turks from the chooks, and keeping runs/coops clean and dry will cut down on any stress that might be contributing to illness.

Getting testing done on the droppings reduces time wasted guessing and worrying.

Good luck!

They're pets. One is a Broad Breasted White hen, I believe we have a male and female Red Bourbon turkeys, and I believe the man we got the last male and female from said that the male might be a Nargasett turkey so I'm assuming the female would be too but I'm not exactly sure what breed they are.

I have no idea what they weigh.

Thank you.

Since they are pets you could use something like Baytril for the respiratory infection, or you could try Tylan 200. Either way, you will need to know how much they weigh.

I was just searching this thread because I have a turkey with a respiratory infection and wanted to find the dosage for Tylan 50 injectable, but subcutaneously.

I read that you have observed yellow poop from your turkeys and this is symptomatic of "Blackhead", which can be life threatening. Unfortunately, there is no medication for it. It is often carried by chickens who are very rarely affected, but it is a big problem for turkeys. I lost one to it this year and and had several more who had the yellow poop, but no other symptoms, so I started them all on 1 cup of cayenne pepper per 10 lbs of feed. All of the yellow poo disappeared within 2 weeks. I only raise heritage breeds, which I believe are more resistant to disease, but I have talked to other heritage breeders who have lost their entire flocks to Blackhead disease. I certainly wish there was more I could tell you. I researched as much as I could on the Cayenne and wasn't sure it would work, but it was the only thing available to try, so I did....and my turkeys survived.

Good Luck!

Welcome to BYC!

Who said there was no medication for it? That is not true! The medication for blackhead is called metronidazole, which can be purchased OTC for tropical fish and is sold as "Fish-Zole" and "API General Cure". One can also get it OTC from pigeon supply stores. Other drugs that can be used are Dimetridiazole and Ronidazole, but they aren't as easy to find OTC.

Regarding Tylan, the Elanco webpage says the dose for turkeys is 60mg per *pound* per day.

Thank you Kathy! I have been working with 2 poultry veterinarians at Purdue University. So, I wonder why they didn't bring this up! I will definitely be doing more research on it. I wish I had searched this site long ago....now I know what to do next year, if BH rears its ugly head again. I LOVE MY TURKEYS....but was close to giving up raising them because of BH, because I can't separate them totally from my chickens. I will definitely be visiting this site more often! They probably didn't mention it because it's on the list of drugs that are banned for use in food animals.
