If you had to choose one ... ??

Someday, when I decide to quit playing around with sex links and mixed breeds, this is where I'm going....

The original Rex sure was a looker, wasn't he? I can't think of any better eye candy than a well bred BR male. THIS is the epitome of heritage! Some folks who saw Rex #1 in person would say his barring made their eyes hurt.

Hey! Don't knock mixed breeds. My very best layers are my mixes and Easter Eggers. Next spring I will hatch eggs from my best laying hens and I will have more mixes and Easter Eggers. My pure breeds, not so much.

Well, I love my mixes, but the topic of this thread is " if you could have only one heritage breed....".

My best layer for the last few years is an almost 5 year old red hen who is BLRW x Blue Ameraucana. Her daughter, sired by my Delaware rooster, is a year and a half old and matches her egg for egg and I hope she'll be just as great at almost 5 years old as her mother is.

No one here's knocking mixed breeds, just trying to play along with the OP's title. My hand's down best layers were my EE/Leghorn mixes, and have made great layers when put under my homemade black sexlink rooster. For a few years the back bone of my layer flock were at least 4 way mixes!

but Rex's barring is hypnotic......

Sure was. Sigh.

Quote: I love them, too. They are fabulous. I also have blue and splash Rocks who are almost 5 years old and they are excellent layers, though they are not nearly as large and solid as the Stukel BRs.
