What to do with old hens?

I have a couple Buff hens that are too old to lay anymore. I don't have the heart to stew them,but really don't want to keep feeding non-egg- producing birds. I know some people just release their unwanted ducks on a local lake in hopes that other people feed them bread scraps.But is that the right thing to do?

and abandoning an animal is against the law

not saying that your a bad person ,you definitely care for your ducks,but when you signed up to get them you should've known that this was going to happen eventually

Even multi-grain bread?

I'll try not to be so soft then and stew them
 
It's not a bad idea, it's a terrible idea.

They can't fly and evade predators.
They are domestic animals that need duck food. They can't get enough nutrition from a couple slices of white bread a week.
Have you been feeding them bread their whole life? If not, then they shouldn't live out their years on such a diet.
If you can't do the deed, put them on craigslist and let someone take advantage of the meat rather than a raccoon.

Living a life of terror, starving and dying a violent death is so much better than the stewpot.

OMG! Some of you are way too sensitive and jump to the wrong conclusions. I was simply curious to what others thought or did.

I didn't say I would release them and I don't feed mine bread other than an occasional slice of oat bread.
Where did all these domestic ducks apparently living the good life on public lakes come from?

And are you serious about your last sentence?

I'm sorry to be so insensitive but you did make the statement and ask if dumping them on lakes was a good idea.
And no, I wasn't serious, it was sarcasm.
And as has been said, it's illegal.

They are dumped in the lakes and generally don't fair well. Many rescues go and catch them and keep them or rehome them. I'd say either donate them to a rescue or stew meat.
