getting started???

I have a fenced in yard with a 6 foot tall fence. I am looking to get started with some egg laying chickens, minimal at this point . Do I have to build a pen or could I let them roam the yard while not in the coup? Will they stay in the yard?

6 feet is pretty tall for a heavier breed of chicken, Buff Orpington and the likes don't typically jump (at least mine don't) I also practice wing clipping, so it throws them off balance enough that they don't fly the coop so to speak. I have four foot fencing and 99% of them don't even try to get out.
