Can't change avatar, why?

For future reference, this happens because your browser caches images to save bandwidth. Force-refreshing the page with the "reload" button or F5 usually makes the new avatar display.

I tried the F5 key several times, and I tried it in Exploder and Chrome.

Interesting. I suppose it's possible BYC also takes a few minutes to update the image, though I've never experienced that myself.
