Free Parakeet?

Hey. I found a parakeet on Cregslist for free, it comes with a cage, food, toys, ext. Would it be a good idea to adopt the keet? I emailed them and asked the usual questions... "Is the bird sick?" "Why are you getting rid of it?" "Is it a pair?" "What Gender is it?' "Does the bird have any medical concerns?" "How old is the bird?" . I asked so many so I know as much as possible about the bird before adopting it so I don't end up with a sick, old, dying bird and so I can provide the best care possible for that bird.
 
You should go and have a look at the bird. If you see any nasal discharge, stress bars, or any other oddity then chances are the bird is sick. I find it odd when people give the birds away with all the supplies even for a bird like a budgie. Normally there is a rehoming fee if not to get back some of the money they spent on the bird then to ensure it goes to a good home.

I agree, if your interested go and have a look. Many times people are just glad to get rid of something that they no longer want to care for and maybe didn't put much thought into before they bought it.

Thanks. Yeah, people have just been giving them away because they need to get rid of them in a hurry, When they are moving.
 
Also, I think a lot of people know that budgies don't do well as the only birds. Sometimes if a person doesn't want to continue having birds and doesnt want to get any more after their last one goes, they try to find a home for it with other parakeets so it will have friends and be happy. I see posts/flyers for that exact reason at my avian vet sometimes. It's actually a good idea to regime a single 'keet. However, I am definitely weary of the people who just give them away without making sure it is going to a good home. Like, the people who just want to get rid of it and don't really care where it goes. That's sad when people can't even follow through with their responsibility to an animal to at least make sure it's going somewhere safe. Sometimes people suck. But then someone comes around that wants to help the bird and give it a great home, like you, and it evens out a bit :).
 
Yeah it is. There was once a free cockatoo with a cage for sale. I called becuase I had been looking for a larger parrot at the time and within two hours of the ad being posted someone had already purchased it.
