Hi everyone just asking to see if anyone knows the rules in Valpo about pet chickens? I'm looking to get some in the future (no more than 4) and hoping I can since I live in a neighborhood! Thanks!

I believe the rule is you must have 5 acres and must be kept at least 50 ft from property line. However you can circumvent some rules by puttng your coop on wheels. You may want to take this up with city council, maybe they can change some rules. Im gonna have baby chicks soon

Great news, this Monday the city council will decide on a new chicken ordinance for Valparaiso! Turns out a woman living in downtown Valpo has 4 chickens in her backyard and had them for sometime, suddenly a neighbor decided to complain about them. The woman with the chickens was going to have to give them up but that got put on hold so the town can discuss the matter. Supposedly Valpo people will be allowed 4 hens in their backyard, no roos and no slaughtering and have to be so many feet away from neighbors etc etc. I am beyond excited and Im hoping this new ordnance passes! I have been researching contantly and i cannot decide if i should buy the chicks online or at a feed store? Im hoping for specific breeds since i have somewhat small kids (almost 8 and 6) i want friendly chickens. I want them as pets and also for egg laying. Does anyone have any pros or cons? I read online about shipping them and sometimes (i guess rarely ) a chick may die in the mail :'( that makes me sad. But i really need them sexed, does a feed store do that? Or do they take a good guess? Any info :yiipchickwould be great! Thanks :yiipchick

Scampy28. The cheapest place I've found to get chickens is at a place called Smith's farm store in rensellear. Buff Orpington are supposed to be good with kids but they go broody. I hatch some of my own chickens but I don't have a roo right now so....

I was at the Town Hall Meeting in Valparaiso, In on June 13th. 2016 and I spoke. Backyard Chickens was added to the agenda and will be voted on tomorrow June 27th, 2016 at 7pm. I think it will pass and you will be allowed 4 hens ONLY! NO Roosters and NO free range

This is good news for us in Hebron as there is no ordinance either way but it will be less of a problem since we pretty much follow valpo...

I have high hopes it will pass too! Even if Roosters were allowed i wouldnt want one. I have always just wanted a few hens :)

Thank you for the info about the chickens! I was thinking of going to Jakes feed in the spring but im hoping for certain breeds. I suppose i shouldnt be too picky, im just happy we may be allowed chickens anyways! :woot

Hi guys! That's great news about the ordinance. I live in Valpo but outside city limits so the acreage law doesn't apply. I hope it is passed and the people living downtown can keep their ladies and won't have to part with their beloved pets. I'm new to backyard chickening and so far things are doing well. I have a Barred Rock that's starting to look like a roo so I'm concerned...Ugh no roosters allowed here for sure!

Hi Scampy. We got all our pullets from Jake's and out of the 8 we lost one to an umbilical infection. I know their list of specialty hens was pretty extensive. We were supposed to get to Amerucanas but they "didn't make the transport" so they gave us two Blue Cochins instead. OMG those things are crazy looking! I'd recommend Jake's for sure though =)
