hen with eye injury

hello all,

i free range my hens and rooster during the day, and yesterday i noticed that one of the girls was off by herself in the woods which is unusual. This morning, her left eye was completely swollen shut. She isn't hurt anywhere else so i'm thinking one of the other chickens pecked her in the eye. She doesn't seem the same...not excited for the scratch or meal worms she normally is excited about. Should I give it a few days and see if the eye heals, or should I call the vet?
 
A photo may help. I would try to determine if this is an eye injury or possibly, a respiratory disease such as mycoplasma (MG) or coryza. A peck wound may leave a mark around the eye, and infection may require an antibiotic, as well as cleaning the eye with saline and applying plain Neosporin, Terramycin eye ointment or Vetericyn Eye Gel. Respiratory diseases can be viral or fungal which won't respond to antibiotics, or bacterial or mycoplasmas which may respond to Tylan, oxytetracycline, or Duramycin. That's as good a picture as I could get. It looked like it was opening up a bit today. She has no discharge from eye or nose so I don't think it's respiratory.
 
will a feed supply store have the eye ointment you suggested? is neosporin safe? Sorry for so many questions and thank you so much!! you are an angel!
 
I have used Neosporin in treating my chicken with an eye injury. Many feed stores carry Terramycin eye ointment or Vetericyn eye gel. You may have to ask for them since my TSC locks them up because they are easily carried off.
 
I had something similar.

I used Tylan 50 watered down with saline and dropped it in a flock member's eye with some antibiotic cream (without painkiller). Her eye swelled shut, but no respiratory issue. I believe it was some kind of little infection.

Tylan 50 injectable is available at Tractor Supply. :) You'll need needles and syringes for this application.

Maybe it's the photo, but I feel like I see puss. If she's got puss in there, you may have to dig it out.

What no honey for that end? My second of four roosters got hammered in a fight yesterday. Eye was bleeding. So I put antisporin after cleaning with hydrogen peroxide and moistened tissue. I compressed it for a short time with a warm moistened cloth twice. I am just interested in what is said here. thanks
 
If you can get chlorhexidine from Walgreens, your chickens will thank you.

Hydrogen peroxide is really tough on their skin and tissue.

Saline rinse, neosporin, time, warmth, and space.

Offer boiled egg or meal worms for help healing tissue injuries.
