Gday everyone, I'm new here so.... Hi!
I'm hoping someone can shed some light on this little issue for me.

We sadly lost one of our chickens recently ( we have australorps). We now only have one hen but she is starting to make different sounds in the morning. She would be about 4 years old, still laying but we find her at the back door each morning almost crowing. It's not as developed as a rooster but definitely loud enough to wake us all up.

So... I've heard chickens can change sex but from what I read it's normally when there's a flock and one takes the dominant position. Is she maybe lonely?? Do chickens get lonely?

If she is getting her 'rooster on' :) we will have to get rid of her and I don't want to. Can you help??

Chickens are flock animals, and she may very well be lonely. There are crowing hens - it happens upon occasion. Also on rare occasions a hen will metamorphose into a rooster complete with secondary sex characteristics and crowing. When this happens there is generally some sort of an ovarian problem/cancer. If she were mine I would try getting her a companion or better yet 2 companions. That way if something happens to one, two remain for companionship.

I agree with sourland.they are flock animals.she needs some companions.Poor thing.she is more and likely feeling lost.

A pullet is a chicken who is in her first year of life. Do you mean chicks or full sized birds? If you get chicks, she'll beat them up, and maybe kill them. I'd recommend that you get her a couple of girls her size for buddies.
