Maybe the lady I got my eggs from just had a bad batch. In fact of all the RIR eggs I asked for, I have one beautiful day old chick and one beautiful freaky looking one that is most likely a Naked Neck Chick. So, there must have been a recessive gene in her roos or hens.

This lady has a gazillion chickens in the country and I think it would be hard to get a pure bread RIR. I am kind of excited about the Naked Neck Chick. I read up on them and they sound really cool. It just looks so odd in a very cute way.

Thanks AmyLynn, I agree with you. And don't we all need the right amount of lovin!!!!! So instead of going back to that lady again for our eggs, I am going with ours. I have 4 from my RIR (and one of them is her record egg, 74 grams). We have a gorgeous Plymouth Rock roo and a Sussex (not pure) roo. The Sussex is number two in comman and I think our RIR gets her love from the PR. So, I am not sure what type of chick we will get from a PR and RIR, but hopefully the hens will lay like my RIR. She is a machine. My smallest hen and she is the best layer. I should have enough to start my next round of incubating tomorrow or Saturday and will update on the progress.

That sounds like they weren't fertilized. Strange, since she has so many chickens, you would think they roosters would be doing their job. I would let her know about it and ask her for more eggs, including some extras. Crack them and check for the bulls eye to verify fertility. Maybe they're eggs from pullets who just began laying and weren't fertilized yet.

I got 24 new eggs from a new egg lady, blue's, greens' pinks and browns. I am very excited. For the first time I weighed each egg and numbered each egg and will chart their weight throughout this next batch. Also using my old Brinsea MINI along with my new Octagon 20, so I am incubating 25 eggs total. 5 are 70-74 grammers from my sexlink who is a machine.

Also I bought a combination humidity and temp gauge from the hardware store garden side, $14.99. It works great. I discovered that I get no way near enough humidity during lockdown (having done some experimenting before starting this batch tonight). I used to scott paper towels, wet them, and the humidity went up to 60% like it was meant to be.

So, here we go again.......wish me luck.

Hey AmyLynn, I was going to PM you after this, but you are here. lol. Hey as to your point on humidity, I filled both wells and only got up to like 58%, but the two wet towels did get me exactly up to 65% (I think I said 60 in my thread). So thank you for that reminder. Yes this will be fun. If all the eggs are fertile, and I get a 75% hatch rate, that will bring us up to 31 chickens. I can't wait. We have 2 new chicks, 2 infants soon to go to the big house, and 9 adults (2 being roos). So, I guess actually I would want 2 more to be roos. I need to recheck my math on how many roos you want per how many hens, I think it is one roo per 6-8 hens, but I am not sure. I am going to use your new sponge idea when the time comes.
