Dead chicken

I found my 9 month old hen dead. No noticeable injuries or blood. She was healthy and last laid an egg yesterday. I'm wondering if a chicken can break it's own neck? The area she was found in was a dog kennel with vertical bars that her head could have easily fit through. Is it probable that in her desire to get out she broke her neck sticking it through the bars?

She wasn't found in the bars, but lying on her belly next to the bars. Just hoping to figure out what happened to her today. THank you.

Similar thing happened to mine a few months ago. She was free ranging just fine during the day and then went to roost like she did every night. No sounds of distress during the night. But lying on her side with her neck tucked in the next morning, dead. The only thing I noticed weird was a bald reddish spot of skin on her underbelly. It is sad and I eish I knew what happened so when I get another one I can avoid it. Good luck to you.

Hello!
400

Welcome to BYC and the coop! There's a lot of great peeps here! Feel free to ask lots of questions. But most of all, make yourself at home. I'm so glad you decided to joined the BYC family. I look forward to seeing you around BYC. It would seem to me, that if she did as you suspected, she would have died with head in the bars. Was she used to the dog crate. Bird can psych themselves out enough, that they can have a heart attack. it may be one of those freak deaths, we never really find out what happened. I've had one myself. So sorry for your loss. :hugs

I found one of my hens dead today. There has been no apparent illness that I have noticed. Her legs and toes were pointed straight out and her neck was bowed. She was not in the coop or run as they were out free ranging today. Any ideas? No blood anywhere on her either.

The same thing happened to one of my hens today. She had a red rash on her belly and just died out of no where.

Hello I've got a mystery I was hoping someone could help me solve. I've got a pen wit 6 hens 3 roosters 2 guineas n 2 turkeys but besides that I have 3 red sex links who I believe are about 3 and I do not know who did or didn't lay but I stopped receiving eggs from them a week or less ago I still get eggs from the others and there's sometimes yolk on the clutch of eggs but none broke (everyone likes to lay in the same spot) well on to the mystery everyone seems healthy but today I found one of the sex link hens under the coop dead I also had a black maran ,less than a yr old she hadn't started laying yet, found dead under the coop about a month or so ago what's going on here?

Hey, ChickenLittle 3 - I see that you posted your first BYC post on the back end of a old thread. As the person who started that thread has already been welcomed, your post might not get a lot if any views and responses. We wouldn't want you to feel neglected so if you like, go back to the top of the page and click the button Start New Thread. When the box pops up, type an intro and hit Submit. That way we can give you a proper BYC welcome!
As to your question...are you seeing marks or blood on the dead birds? Do you suspect the turkeys are killing them? Please supply a little more information about your set up and the interaction among the birds. You might also post that in your new welcome - that way many more people will see and respond to it. Good luck to you!
