Leg Mites?

Hey guys! This isn't something I've experienced with my own chickens but I'm looking after the flocks of two neighbours who are away on holiday over Christmas and today I noticed that my friends' chickens' feet look awful. My first thought was scaly leg mites but since my own chooks have never had them - I wasn't sure.

Thoughts? This one is easily the worst. The others, while affected, are nowhere near as bad.

Alrighty. Time to get down and dirty with some soapy water, Vaseline, Ivermectin, diatomaceous earth and my pressure washer tomorrow. They also have a red mite infection. Thanks for the confirmation! I thought it looked like pictures I'd seen but I didn't want to start treatment without making sure.

Ten solid hours of cleaning, treating chickens and dusting things later - the chicken with the worst feet at the very least seems to be walking easier. I'll have another, closer look at her next week and see if I can't actually trim off some of that excess scale on her feet - there was so much of it I was worried about making her bleed and causing an infection - I thought it might be better to give her a week of healthy growth beneath them before I try too hard to get them off. Instead we gave her feet a thorough clean, spray with Ivermectin and a heavy coat of Vaseline and her whole body a proper dusting. Everyone seems to be doing very well right now.

Dont pull the scales off, they will eventually slough off on their own. The old scales still offer protection to the feet and legs. Treating scaly legs mites is on going process, it'll take time for feet and legs to heal. Patience in treating them and you'll persevere.

Will do. The techniques I've looked up vary rather a lot. Some people leave them in place, some people clip them off with sharp, sterilised scissors. I'm happy to leave them though. It feels safer for the chooks.
