Quiet Rooster, Brown Leghorn

Up for sale is a young Brown Leghorn cockerel that has undergone my crow-reduction surgery. He is very quiet and a really nice looking bird. Here is a video of him, He is not the quietest bird I have produced but is not as loud as a cackling hen. He would make a nice, colorful addition to a small backyard flock that doesn't want to disturb the neighbors.


I am a veterinarian in OK and have been developing a surgery to lessen the volume a rooster can make during crowing. I've caught a bunch of ridicule about this procedure, but people forget that for every pullet hatched there is a rooster that hatches also. I think that a flock seems to function better with a rooster around and this procedure can allow those to have a roo and not get fined or anger the neighbors. Also, it allows people to have fertile eggs. Agriculture is being forgotten and raising some chickens, from start to finish, is a great learning experience for children.

I've never seen one in person. From the videos I've seen some of them look like it's irritating. Obviously we can't know that for sure but it's an observation. If this works for you then great. It can't really compare to the surgery though. I do surgery on very young roosters, less than a pound is best. The collar may be a decent option if you have an adult, since the surgery is more risky and seems to be less effective than if they were young. I'd say go for it if you have the need.

Yeah, they say it doesn't bother them but it does seem like it could get annoying after a while so I don't see how that is. I don't have a need for it, as I don't plan on having roosters, but I just stumbled upon it and was wondering what you thought. I suppose if you accidentally got a roo and he started crowing, it would be a nice way to be able to keep him, but the poor thing knows he's less impressive. It seems like if the surgery's done when he's young, he (and his ladies) won't know any better so there's that too. I don't know, I guess it all really depends on the situation

There is a site member that accidentally killed her rooster with a no crow collar. So, I think being very careful with the collar is a necessity.....

dr. james decrowed roosters are the best way to go!!!!!!!!!
i have had a decrowed welsummers rooster from him for a year. he is awesome. totally normal other than his very quiet crow. i have tried the no crow collar. the no crow collar is okay for a short term fix. NOT GOOD FOR A LONG TERM OPTION!!!!!
i had a no crow collar on a rooster for several months. my experience was that if you are going to free range or allow the rooster to eat leafy greens it is no good. food other than pellets tend to get stuck in the throat. so it begins to ferment and the rooster will throw it up. or it will ferment in his throat and he will get foaming at the mouth and eyes, that is , very sick. no good!!!! also, if you rooster molts, how will he regrow neck feathers with out great discomfort???? again, this collar is okay for short term, but nothing compared to a decrowed hen from dr. james!!!!!
