We had a surprise hatch on Christmas Eve. I noticed a pullet claimed a nest box and became broody. I have no idea who the moms are. I really never expected a hatch since the broody is a nine month old Black Copper Marans pullet. She sat tight on the eggs and tolerated no interference from the other chickens or rooster. I am certain that Calico is the dad. He is a Splash OE. All the chicks are various shades of blue.
She successfully hatched 9 of 10 eggs and the one that did not hatch was fully formed but never made it out of the shell.
This is one awesome mom! she defends her babies from everything including me. She calls them to food and water and hides them under her wings.
I have her and the babies separated from the flock.
I would say that We are lucky to have a hen that does it all: lays, broods and is also a super mom.
