My duck coop
I heard they are a fairly new breed and are getting more and more popular. Why are they so great? I know they look pretty but is that there only feature, their prettiness. Do they lay a lot of eggs? I saw some websites that said 250-350 eggs are year, but than another website said 150-200...

Thanks in advance,

I love my WH! They are definitely pretty. I have 6 females in my flock and I have been getting 4-7 eggs per day (yes, someone is laying twice!) even in this wickedly cold weather (it's been -10 to -20 with windchill for the last week). They are prolific layers!

Wow I didn't know fowl could lay 2 a twice a day

Some of them are pretty young still (8 months), and I think that maybe someone is laying one late at night and one early (we put them in at dusk...which is kinda early now

about 6pm and collect eggs about 8 am in the morning). The first time it happened we assumed we had missed it during egg collection, but after the 3rd or 4th time, we realized it was them not us.

Wow thats cool

I'll be honest, I don't know what a golden 300 is... But, I do love the welsh harlequins. We have a pekin and a rouen, too, but not as pretty as the WH. Also, one thing I like is that my WH lay eggs similar (a little larger, but not much) in size to a chicken egg (makes baking/cooking conversion a little easier)...the pekin and rouen lay huge monster eggs. :)

We love our WH! She is so sweet, quiet, great layer, and has this funny quirk of running up behind your foot while you're walking. Once you turn around to see what she's doing, she stops suddenly and looks around like "What? I've been here the whole time..."

We love our Golden 300, too. Good personality, great layer. We also have a Cayuga, Black Runner, Peking, and Black Swedish. They each have their own fun personality, and we are loaded with eggs. In the dead of winter, we are still getting 3-4 eggs every day. Back in the fall, we were getting 5-6 daily. We just love our girls, and don't know how we managed life before ducks!

I have Welshies too and I love them.

Mine are too young to lay yet at only 4 months old, but what I've heard about their egg laying prowess is one reason I chose them. And their calm demeanor. They can quack pretty loud when they mean business, but overall, they aren't very noisy either. They are also a smaller breed, which is good when you don't have much room like me. One thing to mention is that they are a good all purpose duck. While I'm never going to eat mine, they are also known as a good meat bird as well.
