Hi
Can anyone tell me why Plymouth rock roosters get such a mixed rap, seemingly more than other breeds.

Some say they are the sweetest roosters on the planet and some say they are hell on earth !

I assume it might have something to do with their genetic line or is it just a case of nature vs nurture ? I am about to acquire a couple (first time for a BR rooster) and want to know whether I'm acquiring at great roast or a great flock protector for my Free range girls !!

Thanks for your thoughts.

The breeds temperament is a little different than an individual birds behavior most cock/cockerels will go after you at one time or another. You would have to outweigh "hmm is are the males of the breed tend to be as aggressive like let's say and aseel or are they as docile as a silkie" it's more what they tend to be because I have never raised a totally docile silkie. You may get one that's mean or you may not

on a scale of 1 to 10 I would give them a 7 knowing that most of the American class breeds tend to have. It's also important to remember that Australia may have the original Plymouth Rock strain which may be totally different than what America has done with our Plymouth rock. Australia is probably the best place to get Plymouth Rocks for show.

Thanks. Good to know we got some nice lines here, I am looking forward to getting the new boys at the weekend. I hope to improve the looks of my current mixed flock inc some newly acquired blue Australorps also want to see if I can put some meat on my next season of leghorns(I'm sure that's been tried before !)

Here he is, just under 1 yr old so got some filling out to do. I did ask him to stand still but he's a typical rooster and ignored me so this is the best of several blurred photos !
I've named him Pavorotti due to his very loud singing voice and even thou he is in quarantine and doesn't breath the same air as my other chooks yet, he can hear them and he is already making 'come and see what I have for you' and 'well done for laying an egg' conversations. To my utter dismay he did a full 'I've laid an egg' song with one of my leghorns as chorus this morning, I honestly thought their was a random hen on my property !!
I've had no trouble from him at all so far, already handled him a couple of times when I move the pen and I seriously hope he stays well behaved because he is far to BIG (and not fully grown yet) to mess about with.
I think he's very hansom and I'm very glad I found him.

We have had both gentle and aggressive Rock roosters. The two exhibition lines (barred & partridge) have been the docile birds. Unfortunately, the more aggressive roosters are going to make better flock protectors.

I agree with the flock protection I definitely want an alert and protective/angry rooster for that. I house my girls at night and don't fancy a fight with a 4kg grumpy rooster every morning so fingers crossed he stays fairly chilled out. Interesting that your different lines have different temperaments.
:)
