The same author interviewed in the National Geographic article mentioned above, Andrew Lawler, also did an interview on an episode of NPR's On Point. Thank you @Sqwidy for the link to the interview in your post Cool episode of On Point (on NPR) about chickens!
The April 1927 issue of The National Geographic Magazine has amazing articles about chickens with beautiful full color pages of paintings of them and is definitely worth acquiring if a copy in good condition can be found. Three of the four feature articles: The Races of Domestic Fowl (67 illustrations), Fowl of the Old and New World (29 paintings from life), and America's Debt to the Hen (15 illustrations). It's Volume LI, Number Four.
The September 1948 issue of The National Geographic Magazine has a fascinating article entitled "Easter Egg Chickens (9 natural color photographs)" which relates the story of a man who developed a flock of easter eggers. He was inspired by the painting of Araucanas in the April 1927 issue mentioned above. It's Volume XCIV, Number Three.
