I only have a couple of Buff Orpingtons, who I let free range. I used to have 3 but recently lost one to a neighborhood dog right in front of my children, who were left devastated. Well, we were devastated. Ever since then I was so worried to let them out but would feel bad for them, and I'm usually home to watch them, but was always afraid to even go inside to pee for fear that the same dog or another one would get the ones that are left. So, I decided to build them a fence. I would say they have a nice little yard where they can still do digging and take dirt baths and hunt for bugs just like they could before, however, they are not liking being confined at all. They spend a lot of the day looking for a way to escape. I'm wondering how long it will take for them to get used to it and if it will effect their egg laying, and I also don't want them to get depressed or anything like that. Has anyone else gone through this? Some advice would be much appreciated!

They'll be fine as long as they have enough room to do their usual chicken stuff. Give them as big of an area as you can. My chickens are fenced in to about a 1/8 to 1/4 acre during gardening season and they spend a few weeks standing at the gate wanting out. LOL They eventually get over it and find things to do in their area.
