Rescued a Pekin. Advice Needed.

I had 4' tall welded wire with a mesh gazebo over the top. So the mesh was blue and hard to see through, it was tight enough that mosquitos could not get through it. The dog tore through the mesh and bent the wire down to get in. The zip ties holding the wire fence to the t-posts were broken. It happened in less than 5 minutes. My hubby was outside, went into the house for approx 5 minutes, came back out and one duck was dead outside of the pen and the dog was running away with another duck.

Avian netting will keep birds out. But if Ruby will be outside during the night you will need solid fencing top and bottom to keep raccoons and other nocturnal predators out.

Ducks are slow and unable to fly or climb much so bad fencing is worse than none. It just keeps them cornered so that they are an easier meal. I found out the hard way.

Here is a great article I used when rebuilding my pen. http://www.carolinawaterfowlrescue.com/housing.html

Update: Put an ad on Craigslist, and found him a mate. Meet Ruby & Pearl.

It was love at first sight. (or maybe lust -- within 30 seconds he tried "doing the dirty" with her LOL). They are so cute together. Whatever one does, the other follows suit.

Picked up some avian netting for the top of the pen, and they will be locked up in the duck house at night. I'm thinking about an electric perimeter to the pen. Any opinions on this product:

I like the idea that it comes with everything needed for a small area (posts, etc). But will this be enough to deter dogs, coons, foxes, etc?

Aww they're so cute together. Nice job in finding him a mate, and just in time for Valentine's Day too ;]

They are adorable together. Congrats on finding Pearl. I don't use electric fencing but if I had to buy I think I'd go with Premier 1 http://www.premier1supplies.com/c/fencing/electric_netting/

I don't think the Zareba would keep a predator out, just keep small animals in.

I went with Gallagher S17 solar fence energizer, and poly wire on five foot posts for an area to keep predators out of. I set five wires - one at about 4 inches above ground, another 6 inches above that, another 8 inches above that, then 10 inches and 10 inches.

The first electric fence system I used was a Patriot P5, ran it off a battery (option to use house current) at night around the duck house. Used equine tape , two strands, one 6 inches above ground, the other a foot and a half off the ground. The ducks were inside a metal half inch hardware cloth porch, with an attached double-walled plywood house.

I think that each of those systems cost a little less than the Zareba.

The current Day Pen has 2x3 inch coated woven wire top and sides, with chicken wire over that, and coated chain link underneath to prevent digging under. No electric.

And congratulations!!!!!!
