So on day 22 now and last night one chick hatched, there are several pips and a lot of wobbling egg. (40 eggs in total in there)

anyways the first chick born is all crusty, i guess the egg goop is stuck to him. last year i had the same problem, and every chick that hatched was like this. i have the humidity at 65% in there though, so what is the freaking problem??

I need to find an answer for this also. A few of mine come out the same way. It's not all of them and my humidity is good, so I'm confused as well.

How are you cleaning it off the chicks? I just normally GENTLY brush them with a soft toothbrush a little each day until the gunk comes off. I did have one that had crusty stuff all around his eye and beak, so I couldn't use the toothbrush there. I used a damp (not sopping wet) q-tip and that worked well.

I just usually use my fingers and warm water, but toothbrush sounds a lot better, i have an old one on my sink too so thats perfect!

well three have hatched now, and it looks like all are crusty! how do i avoid this??

What kind of bator are you using? If it's a Little Giant, then the reading is wrong. That's what I use and I called the manufacturer and they told me that theirs won't be accurate. Are you using a separate hygrometer or strictly going by what the bator reading says? Lots of people have trouble with the Little Giants.

i am using a hygrometer that i bought seperate. i have the humidity at 72 right now. its a home made incubator. plastic and styrofoam, its a cooler from inside an old rv

So just an update...20 chicks have hatched so far, and all but one are doing fine and very healthy. but ALL are crusty. it is now the next day and only two are fluffed up and they are not fully fluffy even. WHAT THE HECKK!!?? IS GOING on?
