Brand new 3gal waterer leaked in my brooder and i now have 10 yucky week old broiler chicks (fair project) i have cleaned and replaced the bedding and the chicks are dty and warm under the heat lamp but their down is stiff and yucky from dried crumbles. Im afraid to wash them and stress them out (or get them chilled) they went right back to eating when i put them back in the brooder but now are resting (at a week old they already seem to get into lazy mode) do i risk washing them? Try to brush out what i can with a soft toothbrush? Or leave them alone?

It will be in the mid 50s tonite, low 70s tomorrow (but damp due to rain) and high 50s tomorrow night. Cold will return saturday with highs in the 50s and lows in the 30s

They will be fine...just a bit messy. Find a way to secure the waterer....it will happen again...I promise! I just had 12 week old chicks knock their waterer over last night....I had the same mess minus the crumbles. They all fluttered everywhere when it fell over after someone tried to roost on it....lol

They'll clean each other up, believe it or not. Chickens can't resist nibbling dried food off each other. If any crustiness remains, in just a couple more weeks, they will be starting to lose their down anyway.
