Hello everyone,
I felt sorry locking the ducks away in a dark enclosure so early so today, we installed a solar powered light!
I just switched it on and they went in the coop and could see what they were doing!
They had a good nosy around .

I was just wondering if anyone else uses a night light for the ducks and does it enourage the ducks to produce eggs in the winter months too?

I have a light in my Duck House as well, but just for the winter since we only have about 5 hours of daylight. It's slowly increasing now, but I don't think it's fair for them to be in the dark so long. I also had a problem with my youngest girl losing alot of weight because she wasn't eating when it was dark. Having the light on an additional 7 hours a day has helped tremendously!

Not sure what affect it really has on egg laying, I've heard conflicting things about lights in winter. Some say it encourages egg laying, some say it's detrimental to egg laying. My only concern at this time was my ducks having enough light so they eat enough to get through their first winter. I hope it doesn't mess up their "schedule" to start laying, though. I want ducklings come springtime! ;)

Extra light seems to have no effect on our Runners or Buffs laying.

Einz, a Runner, used to be afraid of the dark, so we always kept a nightlight of some sort on for her. She seems to be doing better, though, so we don't keep it on all night. I do keep lights on for them so that they get 12 hours a day including their outside time.
