I have an old upright freezer that doesn't work anymore. I am thinking of cutting the top out of it, laying it on it's back. Then putting hardware cloth on the inside and outside of the cutout. I'll use a ceramic heating bulb attached to a digital thermostat to keep them warm. If the get too hot they can just move to the end with the hardware cloth. Does this seem like a viable repurposeing solution?

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join the flock! I think your idea sounds ok as long as the chicks are safe and draft free but still have plenty of air they should be fine. As long as the weather is not freezing or pouring with rain chicks can chill very easy and die. Being able to get out of the heat to cool is the major point but I think you have that covered if they can go the other end. Here are some other home made brooders for you to check out too https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/homemade-chicken-brooder-designs-pictures

Wishing you the best of luck and hope you enjoy BYC I am sure you will :frow

Repurposing sounds like a great idea. Like you said, if they have a place to move from a warm spot to a cooler spot, plus have good ventilation from the hardware cloth, it might be a great option.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to our flock. X2 on Yorkshire coop's advice. I'm all for utilizing recycled materials wherever available and feasible to save money on the flock. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. What kind of chicks are you getting?
