Hi all, I've been cruising this site for the last couple of months after I decided to get chickens. I'm in it mostly for the eggs. I live in rural SE South Dakota. Many of my friends/coworkers have their own flocks and have been extremely helpful in getting me started as well as this site. I'm a primarily beef cattle veterinarian and have never owned chickens. I'm new to the game and my gold stars should be moving in next week. They are some extras my buddy had and doesn't have room for. I've been building my coop for the last month on the weekends from pallets and repurposed lumber. The weekends that have had at least some nice weather that is, I've been fighting snow and the northern winter! The design was influenced by this site but mostly built to fit the materials I had. The hens will hopefully be free range eventually after they get settled in their new home, I have a big yard for them to roam. All in all I have about $180 invested in the coop, chickens, and feed and I'm excited to get started.

Nice looking coop! As a southerner that considers 40 degrees cold, I am always impressed by those with chickens in true cold weather!
Welcome and good luck!

I'm glad you joined us.

Good luck with your flock! The Gold Stars should be very good layers for you- lots of people on here keep them and have found them to be docile and extremely prolific.
