Hi,
It was a proud moment this morning when I let the chickens out to free range and found an egg in the egg box. It's the first one my 7 hens have offered since our puppy, Odin, a Brittany Spaniel (bird dog) came to our home from the breeder. (Of course it is winter, and my hens are 2 - 3 years od too.)
Perhaps it was the golf ball my husband left in the egg box a couple of days ago. Perhaps it was me emptying the last of the food into their hopper over the weekend and wondering if I was going to buy the second bag of non organic feed. (We've always gotten organic, but after 3 months of no eggs last time I opted for economizing and bought them non organic feed.)
So this morning the flock got double rations of scratch and I vow to buy a bag of organic laying mix for them. And I hope it's a good sign that the pup and the girls are making peace with one another.
After that brag...my question is...if your hens haven't laid for many months, do you eat the first egg? I'm not sure why I wouldn't, but it is a little creepy that it's the first one in a long time.
