At what age can I turn off the heat lamp during the day?? The youngest are almost 4 weeks old.
we have a brooder box set up in our garage and leave it open all day for them to get the light and fresh air. But still have the heat lamp on all the time.
we live in Florida so it isn't really cold.
 
The rule of thumb is you can lower the temperature for them 5 degrees each week, starting at 95 degrees the first week. So at four weeks, they'd need 75 degrees. So once they reach the age where the temperature they need is the same as the temperature you have outside, it's safe to take the light away.
 
If you have a 250 watt heat bulb, maybe switch to a 125 watt. Once you notice the chicks roosting/resting away from the bulb, they are plenty warm, then perhaps shut it off. You could put it on a timer as well. Maybe on at night for a few days.
I live in Michigan and moved 6 week olds to the outdoor coop where there is also a heat lamp. It was a sudden drastic change of temps, which was stressful, but they are fine. I acclimated them in just under a week. They are doing great in 15 degree weather with a 250 watt bulb.
Even if you decided to shut it off today, things should be just fine. Just watch for signs of distress.

Haven't checked the temp. They are happy and running around eating, not huddled under the heat lamp. So I wasn't worried.
They were sooooo funny. I take them out during he hottest part of the day for a "field trip". I always put them in the yard in direct sun. They LOVE this. The other day in their exploring, they wondered into the shade and must have gotten cold because all the sudden they all scrambled under the 8 week old like a mother.
 
Depends on how warm you've kept them and how their feathers are growing out.....
......the warmer they kept are they slower they feather up.
