Hello

I'm a new chicken owner. Currently we have just two Wyandottes and a Lighy Sussex cockeral. At the weekend I am inheriting some more birds, and I'm quite nervous about it!

Glad I found this place. Off to read and read some more ;)

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to our flock. My wife and I visited Scotland for our 37th wedding anniversary and loved your beautiful countryside. Having a cockerel already, hopefully the new birds you're inheriting are all hens. The recommended ratio of roosters to hens is 1 rooster for every 10 hens. As they mature, too many roosters will become very hard physically on your hens; over-breeding them, biting and plucking the feathers from their necks and backs, battering them, and potentially, seriously injuring them. The only reason you really need a rooster is to fertilize eggs for hatching, and 1 rooster can easily handle 10 hens in this regard. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your flock.

Glad you joined the flock! Visiting your beautiful country is on my bucket list. I hear you have some fantastic medieval castles there and I'm a big fan of all things medieval, especially buildings. Enjoy the site and your new chickens!

Thank you all for the replies.

This weekend we will add two Marans, eight ducks, two female geese and a solitary Turkey.

I've been reading up as much as I can. The ducks are Khaki Campbell's and Cherry Valleys. There are more girls than boys, but I've managed to arrange a swap with a local person as they have too many girls. It will bring us down to two boys and six girls.

The geese are Embden, last years hand reared goslings so quite tame.

The turkey is a left over from Christmas past. She's a Bronze. Currently they are all kept together but when they get here I'm keeping the chickens separate as I have been. The turkey is the only sticking point as she has been kept with chickens previously but I'm worried about Blackhead, so not sure where she would be happiest? In with the ducks, geese or dare I risk chickens?!!!?

I live quite far North - very near some beautiful castles :). It's beautiful but at the moment we have snow and gales. I'm longing for Spring.
