Hey guys , im just wondering if anyone else notices there chickens going through phases in eating? I have a 9 monthold barred rock, who is acting normal, but i havent seen her eat much latley. I will note she stopped laying a while back because im guessing of the cold season, which only 3 of my 6 new birds i got last year are laying through the winter. The older ladies are just getting their feathers back and 1 is beginning to lay again. Just wanted to see if anyone else ever notices anything?

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

Is she molting? Chickens usually eat about the same each day. If she has stopped laying, that kind of concerns me. Do they have calcium?

They are on organic layer pellet , and occassionally i throw down someoyster shells. I think she stopped laying because of the fall, but last month i noticed another one of my hens, doing the same thing, but she is fine, and eating well....... Maybe i worry a little too much lol

She is probably fine then. It's normal for hens to slow down laying in the fall.

When you pick her up does she feel like she is in good skin? Cant 't feel the breast or neck bone protruding? If she is good weight and looks healthy she is probably fine, but it is good that you would notice a sign that subtle, good job. Winter can have that affect on some hens.

We're glad to have you.

Most of my chickens stop laying in the fall and winter and go through a small molt. If she's acting normal other than the fact that you don't see her eating as much, she's probably fine.

Chickens' appetites due seem to vary somewhat depending on the season, weather, and their body condition. Usually, it is normal. However, a loss of appetite can be an early sign of disease, so I would be sure to observe your hen closely for any more symptoms.
