I have a golden sex link, a black sex link, a barred rock, and amerucana hens. I want to breed them but is there one breed of roo that will breed them all successfully and produce good chicks? Has anyone had experience breeding these hens with different roosters before?

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to our flock. Any breed of rooster will breed successfully with your hens, but I would suggest going with a breed that has a well deserved reputation for being calm and gentle (potential lap pets) such as Australorps, Orpingtons, Brahmas, Cochins, Sussex, or Faverolles. You don't want to breed aggression into your flock. If eggs are a primary consideration, I would get an Australorp rooster, as they are the best layers on this list and a Aussie roo will help breed that excellent laying ability into your chicks. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Whatever breed of rooster you decide to get, good luck with your flock.

I'm glad you joined us.

Michael O'Shay has given you some good advice. Do keep in mind that if you just pick a random breed, you will end up with mixed breed chicks. Mixed breed chick can certainly be enjoyable and beautiful, but if you want to raise purebred's you'd have to get several types of roosters and keep them separate.

Good luck with your flock!

Michael gave you very good advice. Unless you want to have pure bred chicks to sell - you don't have to have a particular breed of rooster. BUT, temperament should be a top consideration ( never a good reason to keep an nasty rooster) also the Australorp breed male has generations of good laying hens behind him.

I would recommend buff orpingtons, Sussex, Easter eggers and wyandottes for you roosters.

You can get any breed of rooster you like! The best rooster is a one that doesn't attack you. If you find one of those, hang onto him!

If you are looking to maintain a certain breed, you can try to keep the bloodlines pure. But there are many barnyard "mutts" out there and they can be absolutely beautiful birds.
