One of the chicks I hatched last May is going broody but she is sitting in a basket that is part of a stack of baskets and there's no bedding around the egg. I found an egg there the other day but didn't know who laid it. Still might not have been this hen. Anyways, I saw her on this basket making some odd noise and looked over to see what was going on. She was moving an egg around on the little squares of the basket. I asked her if that was her egg and slowly reached as if I were going to take the egg and she bit me.
I could be wrong but I think that means she is going broody. This egg is not going to hatch sitting in a basket with no bedding under it. It will only be warm on one side, the cold can get to the bottom side.
What I am wondering is: Do you think I can move her into a cage and she will continue to lay or will she be so upset that all she wants is to get out.
I did this with another hen last summer but she had finished laying her eggs and all I had to do was keep her penned in the cage for a couple of days for her to get the idea.
Please, let me know what you think.
