Egg bound?

We have a hen that is swollen up around her butt,and saw a little drainage and blood.I can't tell if theirs an egg inside or not.A few months ago we lost a hen that appeared to have the same thing.And I felt an egg in that hen.These are both last years hens,and both happen to be Auracanas.Could it be eggbound?And is their a cure or even a prevention?Our chickens don't run out of food or oyster shell.Not sure what brings this on.Any help would be appreciated.
 
If you think an egg may have broke or seeing the blood signs you mentioned, I would put on a glove with some lube and gently do an exam to see if you feel any egg shells or an egg. If the egg is broken, you can't tell by just feeling outside. There is other helpful post under "Egg Bound" that will help as well.
I had one stuck and I put lube in front of it to help her pass it. I then sort of pushed gentle under her massaging the egg back towards the vent. Within an hour she layed the egg.

Sometimes a soft or weak egg can break just by the hen jumping from the roost. I put crushed oyster shell in all my yards, not much, just a gallon or so for them to pick in. A strong egg shell prevents eggs breaking inside. which is never a good thing to deal with.
 
Checked the hen this morning and she had died.I did an autopsy on her,just to see what the cause was.Their was no egg inside her,but she was extremely fat.Gobs of yellow fat,was even around her intestines,and completely around her gizzard.Thinking maybe that was the cause of whatever was wring,but not sure.We do give our birds a lot of scraps.So were gonna cut back on a lot of it except for fruit or vegetable scraps.Any opinions on if that could have been the cause?Thanks
 
Usually a fat overweight chicken will die in the heat of summer. It could be anything. If she was passing blood, I would say it's something else. Coccidiosis is also possible. With Cocci they pass blood.
 
A friend has a friend that's a Veterinarian,and who keeps around 80 hens for selling eggs.He said it sounds like Ovarian cancer.That Aracaunas are known for getting it,and especially because we lost another one from the same group a few months ago,with the same thing.So not sure.
 
That sounds like a good possibility. I have a hen now with a tumor under her vent. It's as big as a golf ball, but it's been there for a year. It doesn't seem to bother her at all. She is very active, and laying like clock work. We don't use her eggs. When ever I see it's bothering her. I will do what's right and put her down. She is in a coop with 7 of her young pullets and they are running with her free ranging daily. I am surprised that she's that active. She was seen by a Vet who confirmed it. As long as she's doing good, she will stay running with her young.
