Daily Duck Egg Report for 2015

We only have one duck right now since our little whistling duck (named Dumpling) got killed by something a few months back. Our remaining Cayuga (Sojo) was giving us one egg every other day for a while but since the pond we put in, 785 gallon container sunk in the ground for our aquaponics, got overrun with algae and some kind of floating green plant she's been laying one egg every day with the occasional two-egg day thrown in. The yolks are super super orange and the eggs themselves are much bigger than even the Oprington eggs that we get from the hens.

We'll probably end up with another duck at some point so that she has someone to swim with.

And... checking back at 10:30, there was another egg. Still warm, too, and it's just now hitting 50F. I'm guessing she laid it sometime after 10.
Yay!!

I just finished my duck house and coop cleaning and # of eggs 0 duck, chickens are still working on it.

No Muscovy. I lost my wonderful Smooshy last summer. The seasoned females are Rouen and Black Swedish, the others are a mix of those and Blue Swedish, Cayuga. It's interesting to watch the older females show the younger ones what to do.

I will hard boil some of those that I already have in the frig and give them to the dog. Will also try chopping up a couple shell and all and try them on the ducks. Thanks for that idea.

Good idea about getting Sojo a friend they really do like other duck company. So sorry for your loss of Dumpling.

For the last 3 days, we've been down to 7 eggs/day. But today Snow kicked the turbos back in. Her eggs are always pretty big (jumbo). But Last Summer they were huge (small goose?) Looks like she flipped that switch back on again...

700

The green egg is about normal x-large size...

700

Or if you prefer metric...

700

Quick question, I heard that you are meant to leave their first ever egg for a couple days ? Is this true ?

Poor thing!

We have another 2 eggs today, and our "late" layer didn't lay her egg until sometime between 10 and 12 this morning.

I managed to get rid of the bad bale of straw (it got wet and moldy) and got to the good bale underneath. The ducks got a freshly cleaned pen today, with fresh straw and everything. I also managed to trim up the bushes in the pen so everything will grow nicely this spring.

Plus, I managed to round up 5 pallets to get started on a proper duck house. I need more, but it's a good start!
