Janoel Incubation Experience

Wow WV. I'm surprised too that that one died. I had one that was kinda like that on this last one. When I finally went to open it, it was alive. Maybe you will find the same? So pretty. I go Wednesday to get my lavenders. I hope they are as nice looking as yours.

OK Janoel folks, I'm putting this out there. I'm seeing my Janoel make huge corrections on me. Spiking the temp to 102. I have had really crappy hatch rates and I am beginning to loose hope in using this bator. ANyone else feeling this way?

I am currently running an experiment. I have a bunch of eggs in my styrofoam bator on the turner. Frankly it really fluctuates very little. It blips on and then off quickly. I am going to hatch out in this one and see what rates are better. I'm just getting sick of such bad hatches.

Update:
The second sick chick was really fading when I put him back in the incubator and brought the humidity up to 30%. His neck is stuck in a down position, so I was taking him out and dipping his beak every hour, raising his head to swallow. He perked up! I put him back in with the others. He can raise his head sometimes, but mostly he can't, often walks backwards and then does barrel rolls. Looks neurological. The chick boost SHOULD have righted any imbalance by now. I have chick boost and honey in the water which usually does the trick.

It's hard to say, but day 3 and I am still having to help it drink. I may take it out. I can't breed it and I am not able to continue this type of care.

OK
I had one get sick and die within 24 of beeing out of batror. Like a respiatory thing. Came down this morning to another one on the way out!

ANyone know what this is? I am sterilizing everything and have moved that one to an empty bator to nurse, but it sounds like a little crackle in the lungs? HELP!!!!!!
I noticed mold growing in the lid of my Janoel and had to disassemble it to clean it properly.

First... the bator... (and mine is the knock-off, not the true Janoel) I think it is very unnerving to watch the thermometer rise and fall like it does, every time the heater kicks on and off. But honestly, I doubt that the egg temperature ever really changes much. I think the temp spikes/dips are to correct for when the unit senses an issue. Its like the temp reading is immediate, whereas some thermometers take time to "adjust" or read an average over a period of time. For example, the one of my thermometers that I feel is the most accurate doesn't change temperature immediately. If I take it out of the bator at 100 degrees and stick it in the fridge at 34 degrees, it would actually take several minutes to go down to less than 40 degrees. It "averages" the temperature over a period of time. Its not an instantaneous reading. But I feel it is more consistent overall, and more accurately reflects the temperature of the egg. So I just don't pay much attention to the reading on the unit anymore. I only use it as a thermostat.

How do other units work, as far as heat kicking on and off?

Sick chicks... what is going on with our luck here?? I'm thinking that mine's issue might be neurological too. And I wonder if the one that died zipping may have had the same issue, which could be why it didn't make it out? Maybe they shared the same momma hen. I don't know, but I will be talking to the person I got my eggs from. I'm also giving sav-a-chick to my psycho baby, hopefully it will be better when I get home from work....

That's very odd Kathy. How old is your unit? And this is the first time it has ever molded on you?
I guess it's about a year old now, but I used it for many days as a hatcher/NICU, so I'm not surprised. Had to mod the lid to be able to take it apart and will post some pictures of those mods in case anyone feels the need to do a more thorough cleaning.

Just had to update with a quick pic of my little psycho chick. S/he seemed a lot better yesterday evening, and I didn't see any more "fits", and the wound seems to be healing nicely, so I took the medical tape off her feet. But I snapped some pics first... heehee. You can see in the first one a little of the hair ruffled from the Neosporin and the scratching. The last pic is the whole bunch, minus this cutie. She's still segregated until the wound heals better. I hope its soon because I feel so sorry for her all alone.

I took mine apart after the last hatching to clean and sterilize the top as well. There was a lot of dander and I was concerned about burning the heater out. Please post pics of your modifications.

I agree WV chick that these fluctuations may not even register with the chicks, however, I have watched my mercury thermometer go up. I'm really just searching for answers to my hatch rates and wondering if this plays a part?

I love the photos! They look great. I missed something; what is your chick doing? My chick is a little better. it can lift it's head more. A friend told me to get a vitamin E tab, nip the end and feed it to the chick. I am still taking it out 6 times a day and dipping its beak and lifting its head to make sure it gets the vitamin water with honey. My family is now deeply attached and says we should just keep the "retarded" chicken. It now eats and can walk forward most of the time and that makes me think vitamin deficiency.

I am adding the chick boost and sunflower seeds to my breeders diets in hopes of better eggs and therefore better embryos.

If your mercury thermometer is going up, then that could very well be an issue of concern....

I may have posted about my psycho chick on another thread. The first morning after they hatched, I checked in on them and found this one FREAKING OUT over nothing! Its little cord had dried around its leg, and I guess I hadn't noticed it when I put it in the brooder. I snipped it (it was totally dried), but I guess where it had its leg bent up a little, I don't know... it just seemed a little nutty. My hubby also called it the "retarded" chicken, which I know is not funny, but its funny that both our families said that. Anyway, as it was freaking out, it was constantly scratching the back of its own neck, to the point of blood and oozing goo. So I separated it out from the others, which were pecking at the wound. I put some Neosporin on its neck, gave it some sav-a-chick electrolyte and vitamins, and had to tape up its little feet to keep it from doing any more damage. It was drinking fine, and even eating a little, and walks just fine. It was much better yesterday and this morning. I'm about to head home from work, I hope having the tape off its feet wasn't a bad decision...

Glad yours is a little better. They can be resilient little critters!
