New Babies!

Early morning update: No more losses, but the last Columbian and one Blue/Red were still weak this morning. I gave them a few drops of honey and electrolyte water, so we will see if they perk up and survive like they did yesterday.

Is there anything else I can do for them? They were eating and drinking and running around yesterday during the day when it's warm. At night I think they just get too cold and don't get up to eat like the rest of the chicks, and they have no reserves to fall back on because of the long shipment.

I hope they make it to daylight, I'd like at least one Columbian to survive, and the Blue/Red to be a pair. :)

The weak Blue/Red died while I was at class. Sigh. At least the remaining chicks seem somewhat healthy, though not completely so in comparison to the Austrolorps or Wyandottes we got last night. We only have 10 Orpingtons, 2 Gold, 2 Silver, and one Blue/Red Wyandotte left. 15/46, less than 1/3 survival rate. Sigh.

On a happier note, the Austrolorps are trying to run and fly. They have a lot of their feathers coming in really nicely.

They were sympathetic but it was really the fault of the post office not them. They refunded me all the money for the lost chicks and the vaccines I paid for them to get, so they were good on their word about that. The lady I spoke to was thorough about which ones died. We ended up getting the majority of our order cost back, so it will just pay for the turkey poults we ordered from them later in the year.
