Sexing my new geese? Stopping biting? Aging Geese?

Hello. I just adopted 2 geese from a waterfowl rescue. They said they were likely a mated pair but that they didn't check the sexes. The geese are best friends at least. One is a toulouse and the other is a buff back. The toulouse is bigger, agressive, and dominant towards people while the buff back is smaller and very shy. I assumed the toulouse is the male but I have seen the buff back mounting the toulouse in their water bucket. I have seen the toulouse mount the buff back too but I've seen the opposite (buff back mounting toulouse) happen more. Could they both be boys? Both girls?

Also, it has been really cold at night and the rescue said they should be fine. They have been fine so far at 17F but it is going to be 0F in a day or two. Will they be okay outside?

Another question: How do I teach the toulouse to stop biting me? I found a post that said to hold their beak closed until they stop fighting each time they try to bite but each time I let go of him he bites again and he also has some scratches on his beak and I am afraid I am somehow causing these scratches.

Is there any way to tell the age of my geese?

Thanks!

Welcome to BYC and congrats on your 2 new geese. sounds to me the Toulouse is the gander typical gander behavior for sure. The Buff could be a gander too but may not be the dominant of the 2. Can you post some pics we'll try to help you with sexes. I have 2 Toulouse one gander on e goose and also a Buff America she is the smallest of my 4 my other is an Embden gander. here is what most of us use as a guide to training https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/561849/geese-training Do you have a secure out of weather shelter for your geese? I feel they at least need protection from the elements and most important predators who are always looking for an easy meal and geese are big bullys but have no means to protect themselves from a hungry pred with teeth. My flock including my geese choose to be outside during the day even though their doors to their houses remain open but I do put down shaving for them to lay on instead of the snow and ice we have now. Sexing can be difficult until you see that first egg , because girls will mount girls and ganders ganders. But maybe a pic or 2 will help us help you.

They come inside my screened in back porch at night until their "house" by the pond is ready for them. I have hay as bedding for them. The door to the porch is open during the day when they are out in the yard but they don't go in. Right now they are in the snow outside instead of coming in on the porch.

Buff back I never heard that term before? I think I'd remove that zip tie it looks tight. I was thinking American Buff for some reason

The people at the rescue did say that another name for buff back was pomeranian.

So my geese will be okay outside on the porch when it is 0F?
