This is my last shot at raising them from chicks. The first time didn't go over so well, I was just a kid, 2 chicks and 2 ducks.. My ducks ended up drowning and my chicks died

I felt so bad! Now 14 years later and after raising older chicks, I decided to go ahead and get actual babies this time. I picked up 20 chicks from TSC this evening, supposed to be all pullets, 18 RIR and 2 that I'm not sure on but all are adorable and currently throwing a fit in my bathroom until I get their pen set up. I'm so excited!!!

they couldn't fit in the makeshift brooder anymore. Thankfully we have 2 full bathrooms since my bathtub is now the brooder lol. 36 chicks total = ALOT of chirping at night, I love it! It's just too cold outside for them so this next week while its warm I'll be taking them outside for fresh air while I'm working on their new home for when they are bigger. I've decided not to free range them anymore. Right before getting the first batch of babies I saw both my roosters attacked by Hawks in broad daylight, we got lucky they both are tough and the Hawks got the worst end of the deal, my boys came out clean, not even a scratch but I don't want anyone hurt or worse. Anyways, we have only lost 1 chick so far, not too bad for our 1st year raising them

I still miss little squeakers though. She always sounded more like a squeaky toy than a chick is how she got her name. The new chicks are New Hampshires. Can't wait to see everyone all grown up!

great set up in the tub/brooder!

be careful taking them out for 'fresh air' though, through the first few weeks they need to be warm, as in the temps in the 85-90 range. If you let them get chilled, they won't survive.
After about week four, they are almost completely feathered out and then you don't have to worry so much about the heat lamps, etc as they'll be able to regulate their own warmth.

I finally got an actual brooder built and gained my bathtub back although they are still in the house. The older chicks are really getting too big for the brooder but I'm not sure if they are big enough to move outside yet. The only fuzz they have left is mainly on their heads, they got to the point of jumping out of the tub and I had chicks everywhere lol. The dogs didn't apprieciate that very much but didn't hurt any of them since the dogs aren't allowed in the bathroom. Anyways, some of the younger chicks are big enough to hold their own with the older chicks but are definitely not ready for outside yet, I need to get the other younger chicks out of the tote and into the bigger cage but there's just not enough room for 36 chicks of such size differences in it.
 
Here's the 4 babies that aren't big enough or feathered enough to put outside yet. I'll try to get pictures of the other 32 chicks soon. These just don't seem to want to grow, 1/2 the size as the others that were hatched the same day and the others have all their "big girl" feathers these 4 seem to be late bloomers or maybe they are roos instead of pullets? Guess we'll find out soon enough unless someone here can tell?
