Hello, my name is Wendy Dana and my husband, Kevin and my 12 year old daughter, Emily are starting our first chicken coop. We are in the process of building our coop for a trio of hens. We are really looking forward to having a backyard family. Any suggestions on raising hens for beginners would be greatly appreciated. We will post pictures soon of the progress of our coop. Our goal is to be complete with chickens by Easter. I am extremely grateful for this sight and all the help it has to offer. Thanks for including us.

Good luck with the coop build!! Make sure to give each bird at least 5 square feet per bird in the coop and 10 square feet per bird in the run. This will keep aggression down. Chickens go off on each other when they are bored and cramped in.

Have you picked out a breed yet? If you are looking for pets and egg layers, Black Australorps, Buff Orpingtons, Wyandottes, Barred Rocks, and others make great pets and are super layers. My Black Australorps are so docile, friendly, affectionate and love to sit on my lap!! I can't sit anywhere without and Aussie begging to sit on my lap! They follow me around like drooling puppies looking for attention and are super layers. My Aussies are 4 years old this year and still going strong on the egg laying.

Chickens are highly addictive. You may want to build a larger coop now, to save the trouble of putting on additions later. Once you get chicks you will want more, and you'll see photos on here with other breeds and you will want those too. Resistance is futile. Welcome to Backyard chickens Wendy. I would definitely take a look at the Learning Center that TwoCrows linked to. It has lots of information that I'm sure you'd find helpful. If you haven't thought about breeds yet, I suggest browsing through the Breed reviews to find which breeds you want: Chicken Breeds One breed that I would recommend to almost any new chicken owner would be the Wyandotte. I've really enjoyed mine, as they've been very good layers, hardy through cold and heat, and are quite docile, personable birds.
