Aggressive Rooster

I understand completely where all of you are coming from. My husband and I have a 10 month old black giant rooster. He is the rooster over a flock of 16 hens. He was my baby for most of his live and even tried to protect me the way he did the hens. Now all of a sudden without me doing anything to him, he now tries to attack me all the time. I can't even walk out near the run without him running into the fence trying to attack me. Now today he wont even let me open the door without trying to attack me. He has now even started attacking hens that I pick up to put back in when they run out. Any advice would help so much because I am out of ideas.

You have switched from being a flock mate to being a "rooster" threat. Meaning, he is looking at you as competition for the hens. He's not afraid of you because you handled him as a chick.

I have a polish rooster who is nine months old, and very attentive to his ladies. He has never made a move to attack me. I think this is probably the case due to his breed as well as my not handling him as a chick or a youngster. I also really try not to upset the hens or be a perceived threat to them when he is around.

If he becomes human aggressive for some reason, I'll cull him. I had a nasty rooster before, and I don't want another one. The polish is beautiful and adds character to the flock, but I don't want him enough to put up with aggression. You might need to try a little rehabilitation for your rooster - grab him off the roost at night and put him in his own pen. Let him watch you deal with the hens without being able to get to you, at least until his hormones calm down a little. He's a crazy teen aged boy right now. Then, you can try again with the flock. If he doesn't feel threatened or feel like he might be usurped at the flock master, he may calm down. He should yield way to you and allow you to handle the hens (carefully) in his presence. You may need to get rid of him if he doesn't settle down. It's what you feel like dealing with.

My first rooster was well acquainted with my foot! My second has never done anything to cause that to be needed.

I have several times let some hens out of the run and kept him locked in and I have picked them up and cared for them in front of him and it seems to make him worse. My husband tried picking him up and he bit him on the neck pretty dang hard. He is now ok with my husband after meeting his foot. But nothing I try works at all, he wants nothing more than to attack me.

He is not protecting his hens, he is attacking you. There is a difference. You are not at fault, get rid of him. I mean, why would you keep him?

I agree - why would you keep a human aggressive rooster? Personally, I keep chickens for the enjoyment of it, with eggs and meat being a nice benefit from the hobby. If I have one that takes away my joy, I'm not going to keep it around. It will go in my freezer or canner, because I will not give an aggressive rooster away to anyone, either.
