Looking to build me a chicken coop. Been looking at different designs. What is yalls opinions on stationary vs moveable chicken coops. Thanks for any help
 
Hi Stephen,
The moveable coop is great if you want to use your chickens as animated compost diggers. I have a full run and stationary coop in one section of my yard, but when the garden harvest is in, I take the chickens into different sections of the yard, so they can scratch to their hearts content. They do a great job of making the garden ready for winter.

The advantage to the moveable coop is that you don't confine your chickens to one place. They really do like to scratch around and if they exhaust the spot where they are confined, then they start going after each other. A change of scenery never hurt anyone. The are some really cute portable coops around.
 
Hi Stephen, nice to meet you. If you have a lot of predators, I think a stationary coop is better. Some of the smaller tractors are too easy for critters to burrow under or turn over. Just my thoughts though.
 
Thanks for the replys. I live in the country so we have plenty of predators. My goal is to have about 15-20 chickens, I'm still looking at different coops to see which one I would like to build.
 
Hello there and welcome to BYC!

I am a fan of the stationary coop. Movable coops can be broken into easier than ones built into the ground. However you can have both and put your birds in a movable during the day and keep them in the stationary one at night. Just a thought. We have a lot of predators here and I can't let my birds outside without supervision. So I let them out for an hour or so a day and keep an eye on them while working in the yard or coop.

I like stationary coops more. They are easier to predator protect, in my opinion. And, if you have a lot of chickens, you need a pretty big movable coop, which can be hard to move.
 
Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! You might check into the movable electric poultry netting, that seems to work well for larger areas/ more chickens if you want to rotate pasture.
