Neighbor's Animals

Right off the bat, let me say I have never had to kill any animal.....I hope I never do but I would shoot a cat or dog if it were not mine if it killed my animals. Now for the question....how do you deal with a rageful neighbor that comes over in your face and screams, "you just killed my dog,etc". Especially if he has a weapon of some sort on him..

Talk to him about,wan him,if his dogs keep coming to kill the hens,your gonna shoiot them.

Call tje copd if he's gotta weapon.

Has this happened? Why are you concerned that it might? Do you have neighbor who's dog comes on to your property and kills your chickens?

No, this hasn't happened but I have read so many posts of stray dogs killing dozens of chickens, I just wondered how a person should handle it if this ever happened.

Prevention is the best approach - meaning that you construct the best barriers you can between your flock and all animals (because your neighbor's pets are not the only threat to your birds). Having taken that step puts you in a much better position if/when one does breach your defenses and you take further action to correct the situation. In addition, arm yourself with knowledge - obtain the information regarding the regulations for your specific locality as to just what the laws are regarding the disposal of animals for harassing livestock.

As others have said, call the cops as soon as you see him set foot on your property with a firearm. Get your family to a safe place. Tell him to leave and to come back when he has calmed down and without the firearm. If he does not comply then when the cops arrive then press any and all possible charges. Depending on your state laws, do what you need to do to ensure the safety of your family and yourself.

If they are just mad, I'll probably try and talk to them in a rational manner and explain what happened and why. When they bring a firearm on to my property though, all bets are off.

You should always have a copy of the local/state ordinance to hand an angry neighbor or know where you can find it or be able to quote it. They can be mad all they want but they haven't a leg to stand on if the law is on your side. My local dogs-harassing-and/or-killing livestock ordinance is the exact same as our state law. I can kill the dog. No ifs, ands or buts.

I have had a neighbor's son threaten to bring a shotgun here and kill every one of my chickens if I shot his dog. This was after numerous warnings and having the dog actually trapped on my wraparound porch, literally caught here. The kid (20's) got a pass at the time, didn't report his threat to the police, because he was all mouth and no weapon at the time. Found my fence cut and pulled back about a week later after he had a raucous party at his place down the hill, though I can't prove it was him, I'm fairly sure it was. Years later, he came back to apologize for his actions. He has moved out west but his father still lives here and loves that stupid dog with a passion, but now, he takes the dog with him when he travels. After the threat from the son, knowing apples don't fall far from the tree, if the dog is a future problem for my birds, he will just disappear. I don't want to do that, I'd hate to do it, but my chickens on their own property come first. And I have multiple fences he would have to pass through, but a determined dog can do that.

You have to be smart about dealing with threatening people. If your gut tells you that you are in danger, call the local authorities. Know your rights and be safe.

If you are in the right, sometimes it's also best to SSS...shoot, shovel, and shut up...
