My chickens have a large run but I like to let them free range in my yard . I have a terraced yard where the chickens have a lot of places to roam, however they have learned to come up to my top patio and deck into the open patio doors where the dog food bowl is. My dog stares at them while they peck at her food but does nothing.

The problem is they make a mess of my patio, deck and sometimes my house. is there a way to keep them out of an area without installing tall fences.

We used to have the same problem. Although, we found the only solution was to put up a small fence about a foot high. That seems to keep them out, that or the dog will scare them away. I hope you can find some alternative to keep those chickens off the patio!

Our deck is on the second story, so we just put a gate up at the bottom of the stairs. Often times I find them roosting on the gate, but they don't seem motivated to actually come up the stairs most of the time.

If the deck was wide open.. then..

Same problem here. Some people suggested a spray bottle of water to squirt them with . A can full of pennies to shake to scare them with. I'm following because I'm desperate to find the best solution myself.

I'm having the same problem. For a while the gate at the top of the stairs kept them out, but now they fly right over it and I come home to find chicken poop all over my nice wooden deck and Nugget and the girls milling about. I chase them off, but they just come back an hour later. I really don't want to have to screen in my deck so I'm searching for a solution. Anyone discover it yet?

We just tied up chicken wire that's just probably a couple feet high. That keeps them off unless they see me with treats, then they'll try to jump over. I have leghorns and an EE btw, they can jump/fly up 6 ft.
