breeding cochin to amerucana

I would just like some more experienced person's thoughts on this question. I like the physical aspects of the cochin and love the way they look. I have just hatched a few of them. I would like some blue eggs though. By crossing an Americana ( easter egger really) with a cochin, what could result? Any chances of a cochin that lay blue eggs?

You've got a couple issues with that....

first, the Ameraucana or EE are way different in body type than a Cochin. Cochins are rounded, fluffy, like walking basketballs. EE are usually lighter bodied, sleeker built, leaner birds. Crossing those types, it's going to take a lot of breeding to get back to a fluffybutt Cochin type.

Second is egg color. Even if your EE lays blue eggs (two blue genes), only one will get passed on to the offspring. F1 birds will likely lay a green egg. Breeding the brown back out of that to get back to blue will again take several generations and test breeding. If you were okay with green eggs, the journey could be shorter, but it's still going to take a while.

Have you seen the thread on green egg laying Naked necks? They're larger, closer to a Cochin type, and might be a better starting point. the NN gene is pretty easy to breed out over a few generations.

Ok I figured the body differences would be difficult to attain both possibilities. I have not read about NNs but I will look into it. I am ok with green eggs. I just wondered what would happen. I will most likely just keep both breeds. Thank you for input.
