Hen is waddling like a duck and breathing hard

One of my 3 year old hens is walking like a duck, legs apart like she's got something between them. She is also breathing hard with her beak open. She also has a hard time jumping up on anything. She still acts normal otherwise - eats, drinks, scavenges. She's been like this for a month or so. I have five chickens and this is the only one acting like this.

I had her in my lap recently and her belly feels hard. I don't know if she's pooping because she hasn't pooped when I'm watching. I think she is because she has some dried on her tail below the vent. I did check the vent to see that it wasn't blocked.

The feed has not changed. They all get the same thing. I gave her some yogurt which I use for sour crop. She ate some, but nothing changed.

I don't think she is still laying, probably since last summer. Even if she was egg bound, wouldn't she either have passed it or died by now?

Any suggestions? Thanks.

It sounds like she is laying internally or has egg yolk peritonitis. They can waddle upright and frequently will sit down. Other problems could be oviduct cancer or ascites (fluid in the belly) secondary to heart problems or EYP. With ascites, fluid can be removed periodically with a needle and syringe to relieve pressure and breathing problems. None of those things have a good outcome, but with antibiotics or vet care, it could buy her some time.

I got your message, thanks. After reading about EYP, I decided not to try antibiotics because they probably wouldn't work. The hen is still waddling, but getting bigger and slower. Her vent is constantly oozing. Even if the antibiotics helped, would all that mass that's inside her clear up? I saw a video of a dissected chicken that had EYP. Amazing how much stuff came out of her. Now I'm feeling guilty because I didn't do anything, but I honestly thought she would have died by now. She still eats and drinks, but mainly just sits around. Is there any hope with antibiotics at this point?

You could try some still, but if she is suffering in any way, then I would make a plan for ending her suffering, whether it is putting her down yourself, or taking her to your bet.
