hey guys I bought a group of pullets from tsc I posted pics either here or on the baby chicks section. One is super undersized like less than half the size of the others (they are two weeks old or so) and she has a clicking noise when she breathes. Im assuming its a respitory infection and the only thing I could find at tsc was powdered oxytetracylcine. Ive been giving her this at the rate of one Tablespoon per gallon of water. None of the other chicks in this brooder show symptoms at all but I added it to their water just in case for three days and have been giving it to her with a dropper three times a day ( I never see her drink from the fount so I wanted to make sure she got her fair share) shes not being bullied though she does get knocked around a bit because the others have outgrown her and are running/flying. She isn't getting worse but is making leaps at getting well either.

Fast forward to sunday I bought 6 straight run bantams they were in their own box but the box was in the big brooder with the bigger girls, and the clicking chick until yesterday when I got the banty brooder set up, I was doing the brooder chores and noticed one of the bantams seemed more tired than the rest and was sitting directly under the heat lamp while the other moved about everywhere. she seemed to be breathing slightly hard so I picked her up and shes clicking :( I immediately gave her some of the oxytetracycline in a dropper as well as some electrolytes and probiotics. Is there a better antibiotic I should be using? this is the only one tsc had that even mentioned poultry and respitory disease on it so I figured it was better than nothing but if there is one that is better please do tell! sorry for the long winded post I just wanted to get the whole back story in!

Powdered oxytetracycline can be used to treat resp distress. Keep going with that.

I would run some Corid through all of their water, if you haven't done that already. 1-1.5 Tablespoons per gallon of water. Make fresh daily and have it be the ONLY water your flock can access (no melting snow, no puddles, no nothing). Chicks that don't grow can be overrun with Cocci, especially if they are lethargic and hunched up. Give it to the bantams, too, and any other chicken you have on your property.

Corid is a very gentle medication and is readily available at TSC. They probably sell the 9.6% solution. It's 9.5 ml/cc per gallon of water or 4.75 ml/cc per half-gallon. You may as well pick up a few syringes while you're there to measure the meds. :) Plus, if you ever have to tube a chicken, it makes it easy to have this stuff on hand!

Keep us posted.

also should I switch to medicated feed? I goofed up and bought unmedicated ( I believe its unmedicated because it doesn't say its medicated anywhere)

The Corid powder dose that is equal to 9.5ml liquid per gallon is 1.5 teaspoons per gallon, nothing less.

My previous post is for Corid, not oxytetracycline. Here is the dosing info for oxytet:

I would use the 800 mg dose of 2.5 tablespoons per gallon.
