Hey recently one of my Chinese painted quail started to limp and lay down a lot. I picked him up and noticed that the joint near his foot was very swollen. Could anybody tell me what's going on and how can I help him? He's still eating and drinking.

Is he on a wire cage floor? looks like stress to me. You could try soaking in warm water for a bit to see if it helps with the swelling. The smaller quail need to be on a solid floor. Good Luck.

Hi, all my quail are on solid flooring so i have no idea why his feet are like this. Thanks for your reply i will try soaking in warm water.

Are they on any bedding of any sorts? The lack of bedding can cause infections in the pads.

They are on wood shavings. The rest of my quails are perfectly fine this is the only quail that has been affected.

A few things can cause swelling in the joints like that. Gout or arthritis, however these are usually seen in older birds. Some sort of infection might cause swelling in the foot joints. Do you have a vet you can take this bird too? There is a mycoplasma bacteria that can cause swelling in the foot joint but usually is only seen in one joint, that being the left joint. You might try a round of Doxycycline or Baytril. However if you have a vet you can go to, I would do this first.

He died this morning :( is there anything i can do to prevent it from happening to any of my other birds?

Oh I am so sorry!!

I hope your heavy heart can heal soon.

If you start to see any swelling in any of the other quail's foot joints, then you might get them on some antibiotics. Doxycycline is a good broad spectrum antibiotic and works well on tissue infections. It is put in the water and you can get this on line. Many places that sell parrot supplies like Drs Foster Smith carry Doxy. It is a powder that is put in the water for a week or so.

I am so sorry about your baby.
